Did God Create Adam and Eve with a Defective Void?

Did God Create Adam and Eve with a Defective Void?

I received the following question from an online listener:

Was mankind created (before the fall) with a void inside? Is that how Satan appealed to Adam and Eve, as far as the temptation in the Garden of Eden? Did Satan appeal to that hole or void inside mankind? Why would Adam and Eve give up eternal life unless there is or was a void inside of man that was put there by God Himself—part of the “Free Will and Free Choice!” After the fall, mankind tries to fill up that void with everything except the “one” and only logical choice, Jesus Christ, God Himself. Mankind fills it up with drugs, alcohol, money, power, prestige, materialistic things, men, women, sex, go on and on with different false gods. What are your thoughts?

Thank you for your question. You have identified a real problem for people today; sinners living in this world of sin experience an uneasy restlessness within—a “void” as you say. People long for something more and, all too often, turn to harmful activities to try to fill that emptiness within. I agree that the only effective solution is to open our hearts to Jesus Christ and have the Spirit dwell within. This heals and restores us and removes that sense of something missing.

However, to compare the way sinners function today with the way sinless Adam and Eve functioned in Eden would be a mistake. Prior to their sin, Adam and Eve had no void, no defect, no unhealthy longings, no emptiness, and no deficiency of any kind. They were perfect. They just were not mature.

God can create sinless beings, but the character cannot be created; rather, it must be developed by the freewill choices of the sentient being. Eve didn’t sin because there was something deficient in her creation, but because she believed a lie. The acceptance of the lie broke her sense of love and trust, and she experienced fear and insecurity. This led to taking the fruit.

Adam and Eve did not seek to give up eternal life, but, having believed the lie, thought falsely that eternal life and a higher order existence would be obtained by taking of the fruit of the forbidden tree. The loss of their conditional immortality was not what they wanted, but was the unavoidable result of deviating from God’s design for life. Their actions changed them from perfect, healthy, sinless beings to terminal beings—they were dying from the result of what they had done to themselves.

Evidence that there was no manufacturer’s defect in the creation of Adam and Eve is found in Jesus, who was able to live a perfect, sinless life in a body subject to much more severe temptations—physical weakness, hunger, fatigue, and pain—than Adam and Eve experienced. Yet, despite Christ’s disadvantages, as compared to sinless Adam, Christ still lived a sinless life and developed a perfect human character.

Thus, there was no void in Adam and Eve in Eden that caused their sin—there was an enemy who deceived them and broke their trust in God.

Praise God that, despite this, He did not abandon us, but sent His Son to fix what Adam and Eve did to this creation. He revealed truth to win us back to trust, exposed Satan as a liar, and developed a perfect human character that He offers as a gift to all who will trust Him. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Thus, “It is no longer I who lives but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20).

I got the book “Could It Be This Simple?” a few months ago and the reading was wonderful and I was fascinated. I lent the book to a friend at work. She is having a difficult time and the book is helping her to find Jesus and I found this very exciting. She has asked me questions and I can see her life changing.

After reading your book, ‘Could It Be This Simple,’ someone was explaining Christianity in a way that made sense to me for the first time in my life. One morning, I simply prayed “I’m sorry and I love you.” As soon as I silently said that, I could literally feel God’s presence and light flood down on me from above and fill me up with love and joy. I sat there crying my eyes out, because I was so overpowered with this feeling of love and joy. It was just so incredible. I hope that more people can read this book and get a blessing from it. It’s really amazing.

I have been watching you for many years and have learned to love God with all my heart. I was raised by a loving Christian mother that had been lied to about who God really was, so our religious upbringing was hell fire and damnation. As soon as I was old enough and moved out, I not only left the church, I ran as fast as I could to get away from it. Sad to say, it wasn’t until the past couple of years that I learned and understand who my Father really is and how much He loves me. I understand God’s Design Laws (which make sense) and when I’m teaching my church Bible study class, I’m able to really put to use the things I’ve been learning and Holy Spirit is leading. Thank you for introducing me to my Father of true, pure love. Everyday with Him is new and exciting. One thing that breaks my heart is that I didn’t know Him sooner. God Bless you and your ministry!

Your message of design law vs imperial law is so uplifting and makes so much sense- it is a game changer for me. The fact that Jesus’s death is not a big payment by an angry God is , quite frankly, a relief.

I would just like to add my voice to the many people who, I believe, must have contacted you to express their appreciation for the “Healing the Mind” DVDs. I’ve been listening to your Bible study class discussions for many years and I’ve been personally blessed by your research and teaching about the character of God.

I just want to say thank you so much for your conversations via YouTube. I regularly tune in to your lectures, “Let’s Talk” sessions, and many others. Through these I’ve found greater depth and meaning to God’s word. Thanks for all that you do and please continue. I’m currently working in the middle of Silicon Valley at Stanford University. I feel like God really has me in the right place right now and I’m sensing that your teachings might be part of it.

We were given a gift of the DVD set, “God and Your Brain,” and we just finished watching it. The truths in this are so powerful and truly an answer to a prayer. We’re seeing hope where once we thought God wasn’t answering our prayers to be free of certain mindsets. He answered with these DVDs and we are hungry for more. Thank you!

I borrowed “Healing The Mind” DVDs from a friend and showed them at my home for a small gathering of women friends. Neither of my friends are Adventist, but they both enjoyed and embraced the messages you taught. In fact, one of the ladies prayed out loud in our group and that was the first time she had ever had public prayer.

When I was 9 years old, I remember setting at our devotional table with a hunger and thirst for God that wanted more, deeper, BETTER. I can remember literally crying and pounding on the table, “I know these teachers didn’t mean to give us error. They taught what THEY had been TAUGHT, but didn’t ANYBODY READ THE BOOK?!?!?” It mattered to me then. It mattered to me as a teenager. It matters now as I teach bible classes. It didn’t have to be so hard as I watched so many give up and lay God’s great plan and gift of salvation aside as being “impossible.” Then, a friend sent me a link to Come And Reason’s website. I grew excited. YES! FINALLY! Then another friend told me to stay away, saying her son had just broken up with a girl because she was involved with Come And Reason and that “Tim Jennings preaches a false gospel.” But, AFTER many years of developing an authentic and, dare I say FUN relationship with Jesus, through the Holy Spirit I see this message has been around a LONG time, since the apostle Paul, Ellen White, Graham Maxwell, Ray Foucher, and yourself (though I admit, you’ve made me back up, rewind and replay the clips, and get out my well-worn Bible on a few things.) I’m so thankful I have found LIGHT during these DARK days. I am not alone.

The Healing the Mind DVD set tarted me on a journey that has changed my relationship with our loving God more significantly than any other study, and brought me to your book and Bible study podcasts, which I now listen to daily, thanks to the availability of archived content on your site and on iTunes.

Just watched watched lesson 10 in the 1st quarter 2021 bible study classs on Isaiah. I want to thank you for your intellectual spirituality; it’s not an oxymoron! From the point of view of a teacher I also enjoy seeing how much personal pleasure you clearly take in not just tasting, but feasting on God’s word – it reminds me of Jeremiah not being able to hold it in! It makes me smile that your cup is so full and overflowing that you make it to Tuesday’s lesson (on a good day). It just goes to show the richness of God’s Word.

God bless the Come and Reason Team from our church here in Great Britain.
