Why is Satan called the Accuser of the Brethren if God is the One on Trial?

Why is Satan called the Accuser of the Brethren if God is the One on Trial?

I appreciate the Biblical truth that God is the One on trial, Satan has been accusing Him of being unjust and we (the saved) are among the faithful witnesses declaring that God is a loving God.

My question, though, is if God is the one on trial how does one explain Satan being termed “the accuser of the brethren”?   If man is “the brethren” are we then being accused as well?  Perhaps you can lead me to more Scripture verses to help me put this in perspective.

Thank you, S

Great question and the Bible is clear that sin started when Satan began telling lies about God which, when believed, breaks love and trust. Paul recognized this and wrote:

“Let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.” Romans 3:4 KJV

One of the central purposes of Jesus’ mission was to reveal the truth about God in order to destroy the lies of Satan and win us back to trust.

Jesus said: “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father” John 14:9 KJV

“Father, I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do…I have manifested thy name unto the men” John 17:4,6 KJV

It is the truth about God that sets us free – John 8:32

So, to your question, if God is the One on trial then why is Satan called the accuser of the brethren?

Several reasons, but they all are actually surreptitious attacks on God.

  1. God is the designer and creator of humanity. When Satan accuses us as being imperfect and defective he is accusing God of a manufacturer’s defect. He is saying, “God you created humans and look at them. If you would have done a better job they wouldn’t have turned out this way.” This lie was disproved by Jesus who “was tempted in every way just like we are yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15 NIV). Jesus’ perfect life proves there was nothing wrong with God’s design.

  2. When Satan accuses us he accuses God’s solution to sin of being ineffective. Satan says, “Look, if Your plan of salvation really worked then these people wouldn’t be sinning all the time. Jesus may have proved that the original design was without defect, but Your ability to heal sinners in insufficient.” God proves Satan a liar through the lives of people who are recreated by the power of the Holy Spirit to live lives of love rather than selfishness.

  3. Satan accuses the brethren as a way of hurting God. Imagine a parent whose adult child molests another, or what if they are the parents of a serial killer, etc. how they must agonize. Satan points out our defects as a way of rubbing God’s face in the pain and suffering Satan has caused. “See how many of your so called people actually prefer me. They would much rather live a life of sin than follow you. They don’t love you. Look at how they hurt each other.”

  4. Satan accuses the brethren because Satan is a legalist. He doesn’t understand that God’s law is the law of love, the principle life is designed to operate upon. Instead, Satan promotes the idea that the law is imposed and requires imposed penalties for breaking it. He then alleges that in order for God to be just He must impose the same penalties on all breakers of the law or legally pardon all equally.  Through this distortion of God’s law he attempts to put God in a bind of either having to kill all humans or legally pardoning Satan and his fallen host. Therefore, he accuses us to point out we have no more “legal” right to heaven than he does. Humans, who promote this same concept by stating Jesus died to pay our legal payment to give us a legal right to heaven, play into Satan’s misrepresentations of God. Such a position raises the question, “Why would Jesus not die for Satan and his angels? Is God really that racist preferring to save humans, but unwilling to save angels?” When we understand that the law of God is a natural and not an imposed law, then we realize salvation is not arbitrarily determined by God, but offered to all freely. Those who trust Jesus experience the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who reproduces the law of love, Christ’s character, in us.

“This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people” (Hebrews 8:10).

We are actually healed, transformed, and brought back into unity and harmony with God and thus will live with Him for eternity.  Those who persist in sin long enough actually destroy their mental faculties and capabilities of recognizing and responding to the Spirit of Truth and Love. This is where Satan and his angels are – beyond responding to truth and love. Satan denies this reality and insists on a legal approach and in so doing confuses millions, obstructing their ultimate healing and restoration.

I would love to have a copy of “Healing the Mind” DVDs to have in my therapy office. I enjoy having clients check out materials to enhance their therapy experience. I have sat under Dr. Jennings’ teaching at an American Association of Christian Counselors convention and respect his work greatly.

I have been tuning into your weekly study classes for a while now and wanted express my appreciation for the teachings that ha been a huge blessing in opening up the true message of the word. Viewing scripture under an imposed law theory always, without fail, raised more questions, concerns, and conflicting scripture interpretations that were discouraging at the very least. Looking at scripture through the design law lens has brought more truth to light for me personally and an understanding of our Heavenly Father that places Him “above all others,” where I am now more than thrilled to witness and serve Him.  I “stumbled” across this ministry a year or so ago and would only watch a few minutes at a time. But the more I listened and the longer I paid attention, the more my spiritual eyes were opened to the ever present truths of scripture. The comprehension of the great controversy and it’s origin by the lies perpetrated and perpetuated throughout the Bible on the attack of God’s character and government is truly priceless. Keep up the Good Work! Your servanthood is desperately needed in such a time as this!

Thank you so much for everything you do! Because of all these truths, I’m excited to be with Jesus! I always pray everyday, “COME TODAY, JESUS.” Before finding C&R, I was always praying for delays, “NOT TODAY OH GOD. I AM NOT READY.” I just need to share more, talk more bout this truth, so everybody will be excited for Jesus.

I was born [into the church], then I left it for many years. 10 years ago, I came back, but I could not take the hypocrisy and the lack of answers to the missing pieces. I struggled, but I did not abandon my commitment to know the truth. God is leading me to the simple understanding of his relevance and I am relearning what the church taught me as a youth… that he loves me, that he has led me to a knowledge of him such as I have never known. He is using Dr. Jennings to connect the dots that are now so apparent and hiding in plain sight!

I got the book “Could It Be This Simple?” a few months ago and the reading was wonderful and I was fascinated. I lent the book to a friend at work. She is having a difficult time and the book is helping her to find Jesus and I found this very exciting. She has asked me questions and I can see her life changing.

I can’t even begin to thank you and your ministry enough for introducing me to the Truth about a loving and merciful God! I have my daughter and her in-laws to thank for sharing with me “The God-Shaped Brain” as well as your website. I listen to the Bible study class lessons on my daily walk. May God continue to bless your thirst-quenching ministry!

Testimony 17

The blessings of clarity and understanding you and your class inspire me to take from the word of God have impressed upon me so greatly the true, loving character of our Creator. I have found amazing freedom and joy through building a stronger, more intentional relationship with Him. What is new is that this is now a relationship built on love, reverence and respect rather than fear and obligation, and as such my eyes have been slammed OPEN as I am continually impressed by the manifestations of God’s true character in His provisions for fallen man.

My husband is a pastor and I listen to your lesson almost every week. Thank you for helping me in my study life and to help me love the “real” God more.

Testimony 29

Thank you for all of your work to correct misconceptions about God’s character. So many people that my husband and I have talked to seem to be against the natural law construct and view it as “errant” and “dangerous.” Having learned more about it through your blogs and lessons, I don’t really understand why they view it that way, except that it means they have to relearn theology they have known for their entire lives. But I’m so excited to relearn this. For the past few years I have been questioning how I could trust a God who punishes arbitrarily and is full of wrath for those who don’t obey His commands. That view made me afraid to “mess up” or “not be good enough,” even within my relationship with God. I really appreciated the point you bring out about God not wanting us to serve Him because we are afraid, but because we love Him.

Testimony 71

When I was 9 years old, I remember setting at our devotional table with a hunger and thirst for God that wanted more, deeper, BETTER. I can remember literally crying and pounding on the table, “I know these teachers didn’t mean to give us error. They taught what THEY had been TAUGHT, but didn’t ANYBODY READ THE BOOK?!?!?” It mattered to me then. It mattered to me as a teenager. It matters now as I teach bible classes. It didn’t have to be so hard as I watched so many give up and lay God’s great plan and gift of salvation aside as being “impossible.” Then, a friend sent me a link to Come And Reason’s website. I grew excited. YES! FINALLY! Then another friend told me to stay away, saying her son had just broken up with a girl because she was involved with Come And Reason and that “Tim Jennings preaches a false gospel.” But, AFTER many years of developing an authentic and, dare I say FUN relationship with Jesus, through the Holy Spirit I see this message has been around a LONG time, since the apostle Paul, Ellen White, Graham Maxwell, Ray Foucher, and yourself (though I admit, you’ve made me back up, rewind and replay the clips, and get out my well-worn Bible on a few things.) I’m so thankful I have found LIGHT during these DARK days. I am not alone.

I just wanted to personally thank you for your teachings and insight into scripture. I came across your website via my cousin who suggested I look into “Healing the Mind” information. My youngest daughter has been struggling over the last couple of years and it all came to a head this spring. When I started listening to the “Healing the Mind” lectures my own life began to be transformed. I began sharing with all my daughters the concepts you laid out so clearly. I ordered your book and soaked it up. I just want to say “Thank You!” My walk with the Lord has been refreshed and renewed. Your obedience to the Lord is a blessing to so many.

Testimony 35

I am so pleased with the response your message is receiving at my church from the middle-aged to the young adults. I have given out 100 copies of the first two seminars and there are more request every week. One of my [class members] came to me after viewing the series, grateful and impressed with how easy the message was retained. He had been a Seventh-day Adventist in fear all his life, and felt like the scales were removed from his eyes after viewing the seminars. I am so impressed by the change I see in members who have received this message, we are in one accord. However, I am sadden by the negative response of the older people. I am verbally attacked anytime I talk about imposed laws, but I believe my mission is to enlightened everyone I can. I watch your Bible Study Class on YouTube every Friday night and I feel like I am apart of the class. All of you are in one accord and I am so blessed to have found you. I pray that all of you continue to spread this message and I am committed to doing my part.

I borrowed “Healing The Mind” DVDs from a friend and showed them at my home for a small gathering of women friends. Neither of my friends are Adventist, but they both enjoyed and embraced the messages you taught. In fact, one of the ladies prayed out loud in our group and that was the first time she had ever had public prayer.
