The Big Things and Little Things

The Big Things and Little Things

When considering God, eternal truths, and the beliefs that we hold, have you noticed that even among people of the same faith there is often a lot of disagreement?

As I was thinking about why it happens, I realized that there are two general types of beliefs that we form: beliefs about the big things and beliefs about the little things.

And the problems in our relationships—the divisions in churches, communities, and families—often come when we assign big-thing importance to the little-thing beliefs.

The big-thing beliefs are truths of how reality work. The little-thing beliefs are the steppingstone ideas that lead us to understand reality.

The big things have a direct impact on how life functions. The little things don’t.

The big things are always connected to the operations of life. The little things are tools to help us understand and learn how to live out the big things.

The big things have a direct effect on health and happiness. The little things only illustrate those effects.

The big things cause outcomes. The little things do not.

Below are some examples that contrast the big things and the little things people can believe. Consider how focus on the little things is often at the root of division in our families, churches, and communities.

Big Thing: Living in harmony with God’s design laws

Little Thing: Obeying a list of religious rules

Big Thing: The meaning (truths) contained in Scripture

It is the truths in Scripture that heal our minds and set us free (John 8:32). The words are the way in which meaning is conveyed, and the words only have value to the degree they effectively convey God’s truth. Thus, we replace Hebrew and Greek words with words in a language that the people can comprehend in order for the meaning (truths) of Scripture to be understood.

Little Thing: The words contained in Scripture

Arguing over whether this word or that word in a particular text is correct or whether this version or that version is “authorized”—rather than inquiring whether the truths, the meaning, come through clearly.

Big Thing: Dividing people based on character

Honest versus dishonest, loyal versus disloyal, kind versus cruel, loving versus selfish, etc.

Little Thing: Dividing people based on race, tribe, language, national origin, gender, economic status, etc.

Big Thing: Being baptized by the Holy Spirit

Experiencing the immersion of one’s heart and mind into the cleansing power and presence of God

Little Thing: The method of ceremonial baptism

Big Thing: Ingesting into our minds the truth (flesh) of Jesus and into our hearts the love/life (blood) of Jesus (John 6:53–58)

Little Thing: The method of ceremonial communion service and the partaking of wafers and grape juice

Big Thing: Living modestly in ways that represent Jesus in our dress, comportment, and actions

Little Thing: Making a list of rules on dress—jewelry or religious hats, collars, or scarfs

Sadly, far too many people get stuck on the little things while ignoring the big things. They argue over ceremonies, rituals, metaphors, symbols, and various teaching tools that are designed to lead us to the reality of God’s kingdom, but they never seem to embrace and practice the design-law methods of God in how they live and treat others.

I encourage you to embrace and live out the big things (the eternal truths of God’s kingdom) and don’t argue with people about the little things, but let every person be fully persuaded in their own mind (Romans 14:5).

Testimony 24

I wanted to thank you very much for presenting your understanding of God. I’ve always been troubled by this question: Why did Jesus have to die? Since my conversion I understood that The Father & Jesus are one, I did not have issues with that. But was there not any other way to save us than for Jesus to die? I guess I actually had a question about God – if He is so wise, how come He did not find another way? I did not see the real ‘beauty’  in the cross. Only when you explained the picture in the medical context, Jesus providing medicine for my selfishness, have I started to finally ‘see the light’. Thank you so much. Your seminar, “Healing the Mind,” are absolutely marvelous & have shared them with my family and many other people, including colleagues at work. Thanks, thanks, thanks. May God bless you abundantly in your ministry.

I just want to say thank you so much for your conversations via YouTube. I regularly tune in to your lectures, “Let’s Talk” sessions, and many others. Through these I’ve found greater depth and meaning to God’s word. Thanks for all that you do and please continue. I’m currently working in the middle of Silicon Valley at Stanford University. I feel like God really has me in the right place right now and I’m sensing that your teachings might be part of it.

Testimony 40

I was brought up in a different faith and have been petrified my whole life of God. I believed that I would burn in hell for eternity. When I was 12 I started pursuing the things of this world, but for the next 45 years the Spirit was always calling me, as I knew there was a God through nature. I could see the vast sea of stars in the universe and knew there was something bigger out there. Five years ago, through a Revelation seminar, I was blessed to learn about God’s character and government.

Then I found Come and Reason Ministries and have come under some extreme pressure when I speak about the ministry. One time a member sent me an internet article titled “Whats wrong with Tim Jennings?” I asked her what she thought of it and she said “I don’t know, I didn’t read it.”

I have always wanted to find out for myself the truth about God, so I stayed with the Design Law construct and have been liberated to understand the big picture. Once we consider Design Law, all other Bible stories and prophecies seem to fit perfectly. It is truly beautiful to see people grasping how God operates this Universe of Love and the liberation it has provided in their lives. It blows my mind to see how consistent Design law is with what our founders believed. I hear statements like “This makes so much sense.”

Just watched watched lesson 10 in the 1st quarter 2021 bible study classs on Isaiah. I want to thank you for your intellectual spirituality; it’s not an oxymoron! From the point of view of a teacher I also enjoy seeing how much personal pleasure you clearly take in not just tasting, but feasting on God’s word – it reminds me of Jeremiah not being able to hold it in! It makes me smile that your cup is so full and overflowing that you make it to Tuesday’s lesson (on a good day). It just goes to show the richness of God’s Word.

God bless the Come and Reason Team from our church here in Great Britain.

We really appreciate your views on the judgment and they make good sense considering our free choice.

I have been watching your videos in The Power of Love seminar and I must say these have liberated me and have improved my relationship with the Lord. I am no longer terrified of him as I was before following your teachings.

My husband is a pastor and I listen to your lesson almost every week. Thank you for helping me in my study life and to help me love the “real” God more.

Testimony 72

I am blown away by the truth that you present. God’s Design Law makes so much sense! You have validated my impression that, if God is love, He would not kill those who don’t want to know him. If God gives us choice, then how can He destroy us if our choice is not to follow him. Thank you for opening my eyes and heart to the pure love of God seen through Jesus. The love I now have for Jesus is deeper and free from condemnation. My heart has been opened to love others as Jesus loves me. May God continue to bless your God-given insight into His word and your ministry. The truth has set me free!

H. Miller, Centereach, NY

Testimony 31

It was very touching to hear the testimony of your class share how viewing God’s true character has changed their lives. My feelings are the same – there is so much freedom in knowing that God LOVES me – regardless of my… just, REGARDLESS! I’m still blown away by the true gospel, the fact that God is not ready to strike us when we fail. He is not arbitrary. He simply loves us and warns of the natural consequences because He can’t stand to see us suffer. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS GOD!!!

Testimony 69

After reading your book, ‘Could It Be This Simple,’ someone was explaining Christianity in a way that made sense to me for the first time in my life. One morning, I simply prayed “I’m sorry and I love you.” As soon as I silently said that, I could literally feel God’s presence and light flood down on me from above and fill me up with love and joy. I sat there crying my eyes out, because I was so overpowered with this feeling of love and joy. It was just so incredible. I hope that more people can read this book and get a blessing from it. It’s really amazing.

Testimony 13

I borrowed “Healing The Mind” DVDs from a friend and showed them at my home for a small gathering of women friends. Neither of my friends are Adventist, but they both enjoyed and embraced the messages you taught. In fact, one of the ladies prayed out loud in our group and that was the first time she had ever had public prayer.
