The Power of Truth to Change the Brain

The Power of Truth to Change the Brain

An online listener sent in this very interesting quote from a book entitled The Desire of Ages:

Christ affirmed that His word was in itself a key which would unlock the mystery to those who were prepared to receive it. It had a self-commending power, and this was the secret of the spread of His kingdom of truth. He desired Pilate to understand that only by receiving and appropriating truth could his ruined nature be reconstructed.  (P. 727.)

Could it really be true that understanding and accepting the truth could change us? Can truth internalized really reconstruct our nature?

Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32) From what does truth set us free? From lies, distortions and misunderstanding, all of which cause fear, insecurity and doubt, resulting in selfishness. And where does the battle to free yourself from lies, distortion, fear and insecurity occur? In your mind!

Jesus taught, in metaphor, that it is by assimilating the truth He brings that we receive life.

“I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty… I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world… I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.” (John 6:35, 51,53-56)

Bread, when taken into the body, is broken down into molecules that become building blocks of the various tissues of our body—the bread becomes our bodies. Likewise, Jesus, who is the Word made flesh, is the source of all truth. As we “ingest” the Word, the truth of God as Jesus revealed, those truths become building blocks of our ideas, concepts, belief and perspectives which form our values and shape our characters. We are changed by internalizing the truth!

Modern neuroscience and quantum mechanics gives insight into how what we choose to believe changes us.

Our brains are amazing quantum computers, composed of 100 billion neurons and over one trillion supporting cells. Each neuron can have up to 10,000 connections (dendrites) to other neurons. That’s over 40 quadrillion interconnections!

Forty quadrillion is a number so vast it is really beyond our comprehension, but let’s try to wrap our minds around it. Most of us can conceive of one million (1,000,000). If we were to travel back in time one million seconds we would only go back 11.5 days. One-thousand million is 1 billion (1,000,000,000); if we went back in time one billion seconds, we arrive 35 years in the past. One-thousand billion is a trillion (1,000,000,000,000); if we went back in time 1 trillion seconds, we would find ourselves 31,000 years before Christ. And one-thousand trillion is a quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000); if we travelled back one quadrillion seconds, we would be 24 million years in the past. Forty quadrillion seconds back in time would be nearly 1 billion BCE.

Now, these 40 quadrillion interconnections in our brains are comprised primarily of dendrites. Within each neuron there are 10 million microtubules and each microtubule is made up of billions of tubulin molecules, which in turn are composed of 445 amino acids that are made of various atoms, many of which share electrons.

Within these quadrillions of dendrites, with their millions of microtubules made of billions of tubulin molecules, the atoms form shared electron clouds. These clouds exist in positions of uncertainty until you think about something and form a conclusion, a belief, accept a truth—or a lie. Your act of choosing to believe something will cause the electron clouds, in various places within the dendrites, to collapse. This causes conformation change within the microtubules structure, which solidifies the memory or belief into the brain. Your belief and memory are stored within the brain tubulin structure until something happens to cause you to reexamine or reevaluate the belief or memory and come to a different conclusion. This is how memories are stored, beliefs are housed, and mindsets are established.

It is by examining evidence, facts and truths, thinking them through for ourselves, and choosing the truth that we make changes in our brains. It is also why some people seem impervious to new truth; having previously chosen to believe a lie and then reinforcing that false belief with further choices to act on it, causes that false belief or lie to becomes solidified within the brain structures. In order for truth to impact such a mindset (a mind which is set into a certain view), an event of significant importance to that person must occur, which will motivate them to reexamine their current view.

This is why the Bible tells us to rejoice in trials, because they help us build character. What the Bible is saying is that when difficulties come for which we don’t have an answer and that don’t fit our current understanding, our minds enter a period of uncertainty. It is then that we have the opportunity for maturing and overcoming. In that position of uncertainty, new ideas, truths, and facts can be evaluated and, if chosen, we grow in our understanding, character and maturity, and our brains register and store that growth.

When new ideas are presented that don’t fit with our current understanding, we make choices; either we reevaluate and, based on new evidence, new insight and new reasons, change our current understanding, which changes the various conformation of the microtubules, or we reject the new understanding, making the previous belief more solidified.

Truly, we are incredible beings, created in the image of our amazing God, with genuine ability to think and to choose. I encourage you to ingest the Word, the truth that Jesus revealed; become a thinker, evaluate the evidence for yourself, and choose to accept and apply the truth in your own life and thereby be transformed by the renewing of your mind!

I am absolutly on fire with the message at Come and Reason! I can’t get enough! I’ve read your book, blog, and articles. I’ve listened to your Bible study podcasts, your radio show, and your series – all excellent! It wasn’t until the past couple of years that I have I like I’m becoming “healthy,” with more to share with others than just beasts and commandments! I used to be a Bible worker and preached when the pastors were gone until I had had enough. I didnt realize at the time what the problem was, but i know now… the message wasn’t properly focused. Now my flame is rekindled. All of your little examples are so perfect in explaining something “complicated” and making it easily understood! Now I’m trying to shape it into a life changing evangelistic series! Thank you!

Testimony 46

Over the past couple of years God has been expanding my view of Himself and His character. Along my approximately 40-year journey, I have often had questions, but was hesitant to voice these and step outside the traditionally accepted thinking, for fear of admitting that I may in fact be eternally lost. In the recesses of my thinking has been the thought – if one blindly accepts (which is widely regarded as “real faith”) and does not question, is this really ‘truth?’ I often find it challenging to grapple with very theological ‘speak,’ but Dr. Jennings has a real gift of explaining spiritual concepts with clear practical examples. The weekly discussions are growing my Christian experience and slowly changing my view of how to live as a child of God in today’s complex world. Finally the whole Old Testament sanctuary teaching moved in my mind from fantasy to reality!

Testimony 54

I had a lot of pressure, as a pastor’s kid, to conform and be “good.” I was good at being “good.” I thought my life was going along well until it all started falling apart and I could not figure out why! In my search for “why is this happening to me, God?” I came across your book, “Could it be this Simple,” and God started revealing to me the many distortions I held about His character, His principles, and how He has designed His universe to operate. I remember thinking, “Wow, I have had this all backwards.” I was happy and angry all at the same time. Happy to have the light of truth break through the darkness, revealing a wonderful, beautiful way of understanding God and His plan for His children, and angry, because I felt deceived and cheated by the church, my family, and myself!

My heart thrills when I listen to your bible study lessons. Literally I have gone from death to life. It is a journey I look forward to every day, as God reveals areas this distortion affects. Praise GOD! I will ever be grateful to God for this ministry and your cooperation with the Spirit!

I wanted to thank you very much for presenting your understanding of God. I’ve always been troubled by this question: Why did Jesus have to die? Since my conversion I understood that The Father & Jesus are one, I did not have issues with that. But was there not any other way to save us than for Jesus to die? I guess I actually had a question about God – if He is so wise, how come He did not find another way? I did not see the real ‘beauty’  in the cross. Only when you explained the picture in the medical context, Jesus providing medicine for my selfishness, have I started to finally ‘see the light’. Thank you so much. Your seminar, “Healing the Mind,” are absolutely marvelous & have shared them with my family and many other people, including colleagues at work. Thanks, thanks, thanks. May God bless you abundantly in your ministry.

You have helped make sense of thirty two years of confusion. The material you freely provide reorganized so much of my life into such a beautiful pattern that has always been hinted at from within, but misguided with my training and what I was experiencing externally. My filipno parents, who were converted from Catholicism to SDA, were sincere and did their best to raise me the right way and I have deep respect for them. However, being immigrants and not understanding the language made for a difficult transition as I was growing up, which also applied to my spiritual growth as I learned the patterns of religion. I have been listening to as many bible study classes and reading blog posts as my time in a work truck will allow, searching for the practical applications of where spirituality and reality meet, and I thank you for helping me find that. You have helped me reach a point in which I can truly say that I love God, that I believe He loves me, and, like David, I delight in His law. God bless.

Testimony 71

When I was 9 years old, I remember setting at our devotional table with a hunger and thirst for God that wanted more, deeper, BETTER. I can remember literally crying and pounding on the table, “I know these teachers didn’t mean to give us error. They taught what THEY had been TAUGHT, but didn’t ANYBODY READ THE BOOK?!?!?” It mattered to me then. It mattered to me as a teenager. It matters now as I teach bible classes. It didn’t have to be so hard as I watched so many give up and lay God’s great plan and gift of salvation aside as being “impossible.” Then, a friend sent me a link to Come And Reason’s website. I grew excited. YES! FINALLY! Then another friend told me to stay away, saying her son had just broken up with a girl because she was involved with Come And Reason and that “Tim Jennings preaches a false gospel.” But, AFTER many years of developing an authentic and, dare I say FUN relationship with Jesus, through the Holy Spirit I see this message has been around a LONG time, since the apostle Paul, Ellen White, Graham Maxwell, Ray Foucher, and yourself (though I admit, you’ve made me back up, rewind and replay the clips, and get out my well-worn Bible on a few things.) I’m so thankful I have found LIGHT during these DARK days. I am not alone.

I just wanted to personally thank you for your teachings and insight into scripture. I came across your website via my cousin who suggested I look into “Healing the Mind” information. My youngest daughter has been struggling over the last couple of years and it all came to a head this spring. When I started listening to the “Healing the Mind” lectures my own life began to be transformed. I began sharing with all my daughters the concepts you laid out so clearly. I ordered your book and soaked it up. I just want to say “Thank You!” My walk with the Lord has been refreshed and renewed. Your obedience to the Lord is a blessing to so many.

Testimony 61

I grew up in a prominent protestant church and had what I like to call religious anxiety. I’ve always had questions about God and Salvation that no one could seem to answer.  I didn’t know how to find resolution. During 2020, at the height of my anxiety, I fell to my knees and begged God to show me truth and light and to give me the hope that I’ve been longing for. Days later, I stumbled upon your online videos and it was like a veil was lifted and EVERYTHING made sense! For the first time in my almost 39 years of life, my religious/spiritual anxiety has lessened. I feel a sense of freedom and peace I’ve NEVER had before… and it’s all because my view of God has changed. Thank you!

Just watched watched lesson 10 in the 1st quarter 2021 bible study classs on Isaiah. I want to thank you for your intellectual spirituality; it’s not an oxymoron! From the point of view of a teacher I also enjoy seeing how much personal pleasure you clearly take in not just tasting, but feasting on God’s word – it reminds me of Jeremiah not being able to hold it in! It makes me smile that your cup is so full and overflowing that you make it to Tuesday’s lesson (on a good day). It just goes to show the richness of God’s Word.

God bless the Come and Reason Team from our church here in Great Britain.

I would just like to add my voice to the many people who, I believe, must have contacted you to express their appreciation for the “Healing the Mind” DVDs. I’ve been listening to your Bible study class discussions for many years and I’ve been personally blessed by your research and teaching about the character of God.

Your message of design law vs imperial law is so uplifting and makes so much sense- it is a game changer for me. The fact that Jesus’s death is not a big payment by an angry God is , quite frankly, a relief.

Testimony 55

I was born [into the church], then I left it for many years. 10 years ago, I came back, but I could not take the hypocrisy and the lack of answers to the missing pieces. I struggled, but I did not abandon my commitment to know the truth. God is leading me to the simple understanding of his relevance and I am relearning what the church taught me as a youth… that he loves me, that he has led me to a knowledge of him such as I have never known. He is using Dr. Jennings to connect the dots that are now so apparent and hiding in plain sight!
