Love, Don’t Hate, the Liars

Love, Don’t Hate, the Liars

This morning, I read about Jesus’ trial and crucifixion from the gospel of John and was struck at the poignant lessons that apply to us today.

The religious and political leaders conspired for months to mislead the people about Jesus and prepare the nation for the moment they would strike. They had their “media pundits” spread misinformation about the Messiah. They misrepresented His actions as being of the devil (Matthew 12:24).

They threatened to “cancel” people from the synagogue if they spoke in support of Jesus (John 9:22). They bribed one of Jesus’ followers to betray Him. They hired people to perjure themselves at His trial (Matthew 26:59–61). They broke their own laws in how they conducted the trial, as the Sanhedrin was forbidden from examining evidence or legal issues between the evening and morning sacrifice. They misled the Roman governor and hired a mob to riot and intimidate him and to silence any who would oppose them. They voted for a known criminal over the innocent Christ (Matthew 27:16-21).

And why did they do all of this?

For power, of the type this evil world wields – the power of force, coercion, and deceit to dominate and control others.

But there was another, even more sinister reason these corrupt politicians treated Christ with such contempt, maliciousness, and injustice: These events were orchestrated by Satan to tempt Jesus with outrage at the injustice and choose to accept and apply Satan’s methods, the methods of selfishness – of me-first, of the ends justify the means, of using might and power – to put down the injustice. Satan was working through his human agents to tempt Jesus to use His divine power to stop the injustice by force and protect Himself. In other words, this was Satan’s last desperate gambit to get Jesus to choose selfishness and reject love and, thus, fail in His mission to save us.

One Christian author put it this way:

Satan was at hand to press his temptations upon the Son of man. Why should He now go … to certain death? … Why face death now, and leave the work in its infancy? The foe who in the wilderness had confronted Christ assailed Him now with fierce and subtle temptations. Had Jesus yielded for a moment, had He changed His course in the least particular to save Himself, Satan’s agencies would have triumphed, and the world would have been lost (The Desire of Ages, p. 486).

And the temptation to use power to stop this injustice and save Himself only intensified throughout the crucifixion weekend:

The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One” (Luke 23:35 NIV84).

Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him” (Matthew 27:39–42 NIV84).

Just as the Bible says, He was “tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin” (Hebrews 4:15 NIV84).

Jesus was tempted just like we are tempted! Do you feel the temptation of the enemy? Do you feel the pull when you see injustice, when you see the lies, the fraud, the manipulation, the pure pursuit of power regardless of the principles of honesty and integrity? When you see what is happening in America and around the world, are you tempted with desires to strike down the liars, to use power to overthrow the frauds, to destroy the enemies of justice?

If so, then your heart is being assaulted by the enemy of God and you are in a spiritual battle.

Satan is the father of lies. Satan is the murderer from the beginning – the author of conflict, the instigator of hate, the master of division. Satan wants each one of us to choose his powers, to choose to use his methods of deceit, force, intimidation – even if it is only in our hearts, even if we only wish, dream, or fantasize about God sending the destroying angel to kill our enemies.

Why? Because if we choose his methods in our hearts, we become like him.

Yes – we are in a war, but “though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:3–5 NIV84).

We are in a war, but it is not a war of might fought with tanks or guns. It is a war for hearts and minds! And our weapons are the divine weapons of truth, love, and freedom, which demolish the stronghold of fear and selfishness built upon the lies of the enemy.

We are never to succumb to the enemy! We are never to give our hearts over to the prince of darkness: Never choose the power of lies, of deception, of fraud, never choose the power of might over others to coercion or force our way. We are to wield the sword of truth in love while leaving others free. We are to be agents of a kingdom that is not of this world, a kingdom that comes from another place – a kingdom of love, which is the kingdom of God!

We are to be the lights of God in a world of darkness.

Love for souls for whom Christ died means crucifixion of self. He who is a child of God should henceforth look upon himself as a link in the chain let down to save the world, one with Christ in His plan of mercy, going forth with Him to seek and save the lost. The Christian is ever to realize that he has consecrated himself to God, and that in character he is to reveal Christ to the world. The self-sacrifice, the sympathy, the love, manifested in the life of Christ are to reappear in the life of the worker for God (The Desire of Ages, p. 417).

Truth and love lived out in those whose citizenship is in heaven is how we win the war!

Understand this clearly: We are entering into the final battle of this cosmic war between Christ and Satan – and this battle is not a battle of might, of military forces, or a conflict over lands between nations. It is a battle for the hearts and minds of every person on earth.

Satan inspires the nations of the world, the power structures of this world, the political parties of this world, to use his methods – to lie, manipulate, propagandize, deceive, coerce, and do all manners of injustice – in order to have power over others. This is the beastly kingdom of the enemy.

Realize that as the enemies of God take power through these evil methods, the righteous are simultaneously being tempted to reject the methods of God and take Satan’s methods into their hearts and attack the liars. But Jesus said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:44, 45 NIV85).

As events unfold, we will see more and more wickedness and greater evil. We will see riots, mobs, injustice, deceit, abuse, lying, and fraud. We will be placed in positions in which we will be tempted to act selfishly, to embrace the methods of Satan, to join with those parties that will do anything for power. But we must instead surrender ourselves to Jesus, ask for His Spirit to indwell us and remove all fear and selfishness from us and to write His law of love upon our hearts giving us the ability to love the liars, for –

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it (1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV84).

So when the temptation comes to hate and attack the liars, to hate the enemies of righteousness, realize it is the devil seeking entrance to your heart. When your heart is burning with anger and frustration and is being tempted to hate, go to Jesus and ask Him to fill your heart with His love, ask for His wisdom to enlighten your mind, so that you can hate the lies while you love the liars!

I had a lot of pressure, as a pastor’s kid, to conform and be “good.” I was good at being “good.” I thought my life was going along well until it all started falling apart and I could not figure out why! In my search for “why is this happening to me, God?” I came across your book, “Could it be this Simple,” and God started revealing to me the many distortions I held about His character, His principles, and how He has designed His universe to operate. I remember thinking, “Wow, I have had this all backwards.” I was happy and angry all at the same time. Happy to have the light of truth break through the darkness, revealing a wonderful, beautiful way of understanding God and His plan for His children, and angry, because I felt deceived and cheated by the church, my family, and myself!

My heart thrills when I listen to your bible study lessons. Literally I have gone from death to life. It is a journey I look forward to every day, as God reveals areas this distortion affects. Praise GOD! I will ever be grateful to God for this ministry and your cooperation with the Spirit!

[This ministry is the] biggest blessing I have ever received! Your DVDs and lessons could not have come at a better time in my life. I have experienced in the past year many difficulties that, if it wasn’t for this wonderful view of God that I have discovered through this ministry, I would not have been able to respond in love and forgiveness. My heart is being transformed everyday by the Calvary-looking God you teach. Hallelujah!! I have tears in my eyes as I write, because my life has taken a complete turn from where I was heading.

I am from Central America. Most of my family is scattered in different parts of the world and all have the same view of God that I had growing up; a distant, exacting, and ready-to-punish-us-with-tragedy type of God. So, I have been translating lessons for my family and, to my surprise, they have also been sharing them with others! I can already see the difference. My brother has often said, “Thank you for sharing, I have never heard it this way!” My other family members are taking an amazing turn from a message of “repent or burn” towards a loving God, pleading to us that we won’t reject him because he loves us eternally.

Bless you for all you do.

I have been tuning into your weekly study classes for a while now and wanted express my appreciation for the teachings that ha been a huge blessing in opening up the true message of the word. Viewing scripture under an imposed law theory always, without fail, raised more questions, concerns, and conflicting scripture interpretations that were discouraging at the very least. Looking at scripture through the design law lens has brought more truth to light for me personally and an understanding of our Heavenly Father that places Him “above all others,” where I am now more than thrilled to witness and serve Him.  I “stumbled” across this ministry a year or so ago and would only watch a few minutes at a time. But the more I listened and the longer I paid attention, the more my spiritual eyes were opened to the ever present truths of scripture. The comprehension of the great controversy and it’s origin by the lies perpetrated and perpetuated throughout the Bible on the attack of God’s character and government is truly priceless. Keep up the Good Work! Your servanthood is desperately needed in such a time as this!

Since November 2015, when I started studying Gods word from this God Is Love point of view, my life has been transformed. My troubled marriage of 15 years has been healed and my husband and I are truly happy for the first time in 15 years. Now When I read the word of God I understand it so much better and I can’t help but see Gods love radiating through the pages to humanity. Gods word is living and active and I am blessed beyond measure to be having this amazing experience. God has given me a beautiful understanding of Jn 3:16 that amazes me more and more each day. Thank you again for your ministry.

Thank you for all of your work to correct misconceptions about God’s character. So many people that my husband and I have talked to seem to be against the natural law construct and view it as “errant” and “dangerous.” Having learned more about it through your blogs and lessons, I don’t really understand why they view it that way, except that it means they have to relearn theology they have known for their entire lives. But I’m so excited to relearn this. For the past few years I have been questioning how I could trust a God who punishes arbitrarily and is full of wrath for those who don’t obey His commands. That view made me afraid to “mess up” or “not be good enough,” even within my relationship with God. I really appreciated the point you bring out about God not wanting us to serve Him because we are afraid, but because we love Him.

Warm greetings from Tanzania! I just wanted to take a moment to thank you and your team at Come And Reason Ministries for the amazing work you do. Your teachings have opened my eyes to deep biblical truths and how to live them out in real life. I started following the ministry back in 2018, and ever since, my walk with God has grown so much stronger. I’ve found freedom from fear-based faith and now live with more peace and trust in Him. I’ve also been sharing what I’ve learned, especially through Bible School discussions. Your lessons are so insightful and well-explained that I try not to miss a single one. May God continue to bless the work you’re doing.

I was born [into the church], then I left it for many years. 10 years ago, I came back, but I could not take the hypocrisy and the lack of answers to the missing pieces. I struggled, but I did not abandon my commitment to know the truth. God is leading me to the simple understanding of his relevance and I am relearning what the church taught me as a youth… that he loves me, that he has led me to a knowledge of him such as I have never known. He is using Dr. Jennings to connect the dots that are now so apparent and hiding in plain sight!

I would love to have a copy of “Healing the Mind” DVDs to have in my therapy office. I enjoy having clients check out materials to enhance their therapy experience. I have sat under Dr. Jennings’ teaching at an American Association of Christian Counselors convention and respect his work greatly.

You have helped make sense of thirty two years of confusion. The material you freely provide reorganized so much of my life into such a beautiful pattern that has always been hinted at from within, but misguided with my training and what I was experiencing externally. My filipno parents, who were converted from Catholicism to SDA, were sincere and did their best to raise me the right way and I have deep respect for them. However, being immigrants and not understanding the language made for a difficult transition as I was growing up, which also applied to my spiritual growth as I learned the patterns of religion. I have been listening to as many bible study classes and reading blog posts as my time in a work truck will allow, searching for the practical applications of where spirituality and reality meet, and I thank you for helping me find that. You have helped me reach a point in which I can truly say that I love God, that I believe He loves me, and, like David, I delight in His law. God bless.

I have found your Bible study class lectures to be very inspiring and useful as I prepare to teach class every other week. I subscribe to the podcast and download your notes on the weeks I teach. The audio and notes are such a great help in preparing. My own understanding of God’s character has grown as I teach the class. Commendations on the thought-provoking and well-prepared material Come and Reason provides. Personally, I get excited by the tie you make between the spiritual and mental/physical domains.

Testimony 71

When I was 9 years old, I remember setting at our devotional table with a hunger and thirst for God that wanted more, deeper, BETTER. I can remember literally crying and pounding on the table, “I know these teachers didn’t mean to give us error. They taught what THEY had been TAUGHT, but didn’t ANYBODY READ THE BOOK?!?!?” It mattered to me then. It mattered to me as a teenager. It matters now as I teach bible classes. It didn’t have to be so hard as I watched so many give up and lay God’s great plan and gift of salvation aside as being “impossible.” Then, a friend sent me a link to Come And Reason’s website. I grew excited. YES! FINALLY! Then another friend told me to stay away, saying her son had just broken up with a girl because she was involved with Come And Reason and that “Tim Jennings preaches a false gospel.” But, AFTER many years of developing an authentic and, dare I say FUN relationship with Jesus, through the Holy Spirit I see this message has been around a LONG time, since the apostle Paul, Ellen White, Graham Maxwell, Ray Foucher, and yourself (though I admit, you’ve made me back up, rewind and replay the clips, and get out my well-worn Bible on a few things.) I’m so thankful I have found LIGHT during these DARK days. I am not alone.
