Jesus our Advocate & Mediator – For What?

Jesus our Advocate & Mediator – For What?

Dear come and reason what does the bible mean by Christ is our advocate and what does it mean by he is our mediator? CC

Thanks for your question. I checked several versions of the Bible and the only reference to Jesus as our advocate was found in 1John 2:1 in the KJV.

So I am going to assume this is the text to which you are referring:

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 1John 2:1

How one reads this text depends on the biases with which one comes to the text. If we have already concluded that the problem with sin is a legal problem with God, and God, as the universal Sovereign, must enforce penalties for breeches in His law, then we read the text as having Jesus advocating for us before His Father to defend us against the Father’s wrath.

But the text doesn’t actually say any of that. All concepts of Jesus pleading to His Father for us have to be read into the text and are actually falsehoods introduced from pagan god constructs over the last two millennia. This distortion in thinking is so deeply rooted in mainstream Christian thought that most Christian “authorities” present Christ’s advocacy as one of pleading the merits of His blood to His Father in our behalf.

But the Greek word translated “advocate” in this passage is παράκλητος [parakletos /par·ak·lay·tos/] and is the exact same word used by Jesus is reference to the Holy Spirit as our comforter or counselor in John 14:15-17, 26, 15:26. Does the Holy Spirit advocate for us or intercede for us? In what way? How? Does the Holy Spirit plead His blood to the Father in order to soften up the Father to be merciful? Does Jesus? All such allegations are part of Satan’s grand misrepresentation of God. What does the Scripture say?

What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is alsointerceding for us. Romans 8:31-34

God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 2Cor 5:19 NASB95

Anyone who has seen me [Jesus] has seen the Father. John 14:9

Notice that God is for us and has chosen us and has justified us! But if that isn’t good enough, don’t worry, Jesus is also there, right next to the Father, and is also (in addition to the Father) interceding for us! Do you see the Father is interceding for you and me!

1John 2:1 is another way of saying the same thing. We have someone along with the Father, right next to the Father, in addition to the Father, who is advocating or interceding for us. Interceding to do what?

God intercedes in three places.

  1. He opposes the principalities and powers of darkness and holds evil forces in check. He sends his angels to restrain the four winds of strife (Revelation 7:1). He puts a hedge of protection around His people deterring Satanic agencies (Job 1:10, 2Kings 6:17, Psalms 91:11).
  2. God also intercedes in our hearts and minds. He sends His Spirit to work in our brains to convict, to draw, to woo, to place a desire for good, a longing for love into our hearts (Genesis 3:15, John 16:8). Ever since the fall of mankind, Love has been warring with evil, obstructing evil while simultaneously fighting to eradicate the infection of fear and selfishness from the human heart!
  3. Jesus interceded in the course of sinfulness itself. Jesus became sin for us (2Corinthians 5:21). He took upon Himself our terminal condition in order to conquer, overcome and cure. “Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,” (Isaiah 53:4).

Thus we have Jesus as the means through which the Father accomplishes His purpose of overcoming sin and redeeming mankind! Jesus mediates the covenant of grace originating in the heart of God to all creation fulfilling the purposes of God toward His creation! Thus Jesus is fulfilling the Father’s purpose as our Advocate and Mediator opposing all that would destroy us. And all that would destroy us originates from Satan. Therefore, Jesus stands in the breech caused by Satan and sin advocating and mediating for our healing and redemption all in harmony with His Father’s heart and will!

You have helped make sense of thirty two years of confusion. The material you freely provide reorganized so much of my life into such a beautiful pattern that has always been hinted at from within, but misguided with my training and what I was experiencing externally. My filipno parents, who were converted from Catholicism to SDA, were sincere and did their best to raise me the right way and I have deep respect for them. However, being immigrants and not understanding the language made for a difficult transition as I was growing up, which also applied to my spiritual growth as I learned the patterns of religion. I have been listening to as many bible study classes and reading blog posts as my time in a work truck will allow, searching for the practical applications of where spirituality and reality meet, and I thank you for helping me find that. You have helped me reach a point in which I can truly say that I love God, that I believe He loves me, and, like David, I delight in His law. God bless.

We were given a gift of the DVD set, “God and Your Brain,” and we just finished watching it. The truths in this are so powerful and truly an answer to a prayer. We’re seeing hope where once we thought God wasn’t answering our prayers to be free of certain mindsets. He answered with these DVDs and we are hungry for more. Thank you!

Ok, so last night I listened to “The Law of Liberty” and “How to Achieve Victory: Freedom, Truth and Spirtual Warfare.” These are both MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES so far! The logic is just soooooo beautiful. I had to re-listen to them a couple of times. I just want to EXPLODE! (<< we assume with joy and happiness)

I have been blessed by your ministry. I have experienced personally, and deeply resonate with, the God of love and the beautiful picture of God’s character that you present. I have seen your seminar series on YouTube, read ‘The Journal of the Watcher’ book, used your mobile app, and also listen/study the bible study lesson with you each week. I concur with many of the thoughts and perspectives that you share. I understand your conclusions on natural laws vs imposed law and the legal/penal substitution (incorrect diagnosis). This makes perfect sense to me.

Bless you for all you do.

After reading your book, ‘Could It Be This Simple,’ someone was explaining Christianity in a way that made sense to me for the first time in my life. One morning, I simply prayed “I’m sorry and I love you.” As soon as I silently said that, I could literally feel God’s presence and light flood down on me from above and fill me up with love and joy. I sat there crying my eyes out, because I was so overpowered with this feeling of love and joy. It was just so incredible. I hope that more people can read this book and get a blessing from it. It’s really amazing.

My husband is a pastor and I listen to your lesson almost every week. Thank you for helping me in my study life and to help me love the “real” God more.

Testimony 29

Thank you for all of your work to correct misconceptions about God’s character. So many people that my husband and I have talked to seem to be against the natural law construct and view it as “errant” and “dangerous.” Having learned more about it through your blogs and lessons, I don’t really understand why they view it that way, except that it means they have to relearn theology they have known for their entire lives. But I’m so excited to relearn this. For the past few years I have been questioning how I could trust a God who punishes arbitrarily and is full of wrath for those who don’t obey His commands. That view made me afraid to “mess up” or “not be good enough,” even within my relationship with God. I really appreciated the point you bring out about God not wanting us to serve Him because we are afraid, but because we love Him.

I got the book “Could It Be This Simple?” a few months ago and the reading was wonderful and I was fascinated. I lent the book to a friend at work. She is having a difficult time and the book is helping her to find Jesus and I found this very exciting. She has asked me questions and I can see her life changing.

I am absolutly on fire with the message at Come and Reason! I can’t get enough! I’ve read your book, blog, and articles. I’ve listened to your Bible study podcasts, your radio show, and your series – all excellent! It wasn’t until the past couple of years that I have I like I’m becoming “healthy,” with more to share with others than just beasts and commandments! I used to be a Bible worker and preached when the pastors were gone until I had had enough. I didnt realize at the time what the problem was, but i know now… the message wasn’t properly focused. Now my flame is rekindled. All of your little examples are so perfect in explaining something “complicated” and making it easily understood! Now I’m trying to shape it into a life changing evangelistic series! Thank you!
