Every Eye Shall See Him

Every Eye Shall See Him

I must say that I am impressed with the knowledge on this website, but I have a question that has been bothering me for a while. How will every eye see God at the same time when he comes from the east;

on an earth that is round with different time zones. When we cannot see the moon or the sun at the same time with someone that is on the other side of the earth?

The only text in the Bible that I could find which states that every eye will see Christ when He returns is Revelation 1:7 which states:

“Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.”

Whenever I study the Bible there are several questions I always ask:

  1. What does the Bible actually say? Here we have a text which explicitly states Christ will come and every eye will see him. But we must ask another question.
  2. What does it mean? And this is the most critical question of all when studying the Bible.
  3. And the final question I ask, once I am satisfied I have answered the first two questions is: How does it apply to my life.

So, step two, what does Revelation 1:7 mean? Does it mean every person will see Jesus come with their eyes simultaneously all over the planet? Does it mean that every eye of every person who has ever lived throughout all human history will see Him when He comes? Does it mean that all those who are alive on earth at the time of His return, even those who suffer with blindness are healed at the second coming so that literally “every eye” will see Christ’s return? Or is the language merely an expression that all peoples living on the entire earth will be included in Christ’s return giving assurance that no one will be left out? Are there other possible meanings? Which is most likely?

We can have some confidence that the text does not mean that all people of all time will see the second coming for 1Thes 4:16-18 states:

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord”

Notice at the second coming of Christ only the righteous dead are raised to life, therefore the wicked dead of all time, who are not raised until after the 1000 years (Revelation 20:5) could not see Him when He comes. But there does seem to be a small exception with a few of the wicked being raised in order to see Christ’s return. Revelation 1:7 stated that those who crucified Christ would see Him return. This would be in keeping with Christ’s promise that his persecutors would “see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Mark 14:62.

The Bible does not give specifics on the physics of how Christ’s appearance is communicated to the inhabitants of earth. Does it take place simultaneously all over the planet? Does it occur over a 24 hour period as the earth rotates on its axis with Christ in a stationary orbit over the planet? Does it take less than 24 hours because Christ and His angels actual travel rapidly around the earth?

The Bible does not state explicitly, but one clue is found in Matthew 24:27:

For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

The word translated “lightning” can also be translated “light shining”. As you think about lightning, does lightning have a geographic direction? Does lightning shine from East to West? No, but what does? The sun rising and setting. Might it be more accurate to translate the text “As the sunlight shines from the East covering the earth to the West so also will the coming of the Son of Man cover the entire earth”?

What have we learned from this study?

The Bible does not teach that every person from all time will see Christ return, just those who are alive at the time of the second coming, the righteous who are raised and those who crucified Him.

The Bible does not explicitly teach that all people living on the earth when Christ returns will see Him return simultaneously. It very well could be but the Bible doesn’t state that as fact, so it doesn’t have to be.

The Bible does not provide the physics of how His appearance will transpire and there is a logical reason why. Because it is not the purpose of the Bible to provide the scientific details, the purpose of the Bible is to confirm the reality of Christ’s return and assure all people, of all nations throughout all time that Christ will return again and the entire world will be included.

How does this apply to my life? It provides me confidence, hope and assurance that very soon the pain, suffering, death, sin and sickness of planet earth will come to an end and all will be made new again. This truth provides courage to endure, courage to press on, courage to say no to evil and yes to God’s kingdom of love! I invite you to embrace the hope of Christ’s soon coming and make His kingdom of love your number one priority in life!

Testimony 62

I would like to express my thanks to the C&R team for creating a platform from which people can learn to trust in God and grow. My life is a witness to the effectiveness of this ministry. Without believing the truth about God as you have shown, I don’t know what my life would be like. I had given up on God helping me with certain sins – it was all useless. Given that the scripture is clear and God is so good, how could I have betrayed him so many times? I was a yo-yo christian; spinning up and down. My faith and enthusiasm was driven by discoveries/threats that prophecy is about to be fulfilled. But when I watched your “Healing the Mind” seminar, it was like a light finally went on. I could see God had no plan to hurt me, the danger came from sin, and that He is working to protect me and strengthen me. Thank you for allowing God to use you. The message God gave C&R saved my life!

I am absolutly on fire with the message at Come and Reason! I can’t get enough! I’ve read your book, blog, and articles. I’ve listened to your Bible study podcasts, your radio show, and your series – all excellent! It wasn’t until the past couple of years that I have I like I’m becoming “healthy,” with more to share with others than just beasts and commandments! I used to be a Bible worker and preached when the pastors were gone until I had had enough. I didnt realize at the time what the problem was, but i know now… the message wasn’t properly focused. Now my flame is rekindled. All of your little examples are so perfect in explaining something “complicated” and making it easily understood! Now I’m trying to shape it into a life changing evangelistic series! Thank you!

I can’t even begin to thank you and your ministry enough for introducing me to the Truth about a loving and merciful God! I have my daughter and her in-laws to thank for sharing with me “The God-Shaped Brain” as well as your website. I listen to the Bible study class lessons on my daily walk. May God continue to bless your thirst-quenching ministry!

Testimony 61

I grew up in a prominent protestant church and had what I like to call religious anxiety. I’ve always had questions about God and Salvation that no one could seem to answer.  I didn’t know how to find resolution. During 2020, at the height of my anxiety, I fell to my knees and begged God to show me truth and light and to give me the hope that I’ve been longing for. Days later, I stumbled upon your online videos and it was like a veil was lifted and EVERYTHING made sense! For the first time in my almost 39 years of life, my religious/spiritual anxiety has lessened. I feel a sense of freedom and peace I’ve NEVER had before… and it’s all because my view of God has changed. Thank you!

We listen to your bible studies lessons in our class in Montana. You actually were the main reason I decided to get a laptop, so I can go to your site and listen, read, learn, and print the class notes. I am so grateful to learn the correct view of God and his character. Now, to just have others have an interest in knowing, so I can share it with them. Good thoughts your way.

Testimony 38

Since November 2015, when I started studying Gods word from this God Is Love point of view, my life has been transformed. My troubled marriage of 15 years has been healed and my husband and I are truly happy for the first time in 15 years. Now When I read the word of God I understand it so much better and I can’t help but see Gods love radiating through the pages to humanity. Gods word is living and active and I am blessed beyond measure to be having this amazing experience. God has given me a beautiful understanding of Jn 3:16 that amazes me more and more each day. Thank you again for your ministry.

I just want to say thank you so much for your conversations via YouTube. I regularly tune in to your lectures, “Let’s Talk” sessions, and many others. Through these I’ve found greater depth and meaning to God’s word. Thanks for all that you do and please continue. I’m currently working in the middle of Silicon Valley at Stanford University. I feel like God really has me in the right place right now and I’m sensing that your teachings might be part of it.

Just watched watched lesson 10 in the 1st quarter 2021 bible study classs on Isaiah. I want to thank you for your intellectual spirituality; it’s not an oxymoron! From the point of view of a teacher I also enjoy seeing how much personal pleasure you clearly take in not just tasting, but feasting on God’s word – it reminds me of Jeremiah not being able to hold it in! It makes me smile that your cup is so full and overflowing that you make it to Tuesday’s lesson (on a good day). It just goes to show the richness of God’s Word.

God bless the Come and Reason Team from our church here in Great Britain.

Testimony 8

Thank you for the ministry you are sharing with us, it is a real blessing to us and especially to my husband and myself! You are encouraging us to think for ourselves and not just to except everything, without thinking it through, with God’s word!

I borrowed “Healing The Mind” DVDs from a friend and showed them at my home for a small gathering of women friends. Neither of my friends are Adventist, but they both enjoyed and embraced the messages you taught. In fact, one of the ladies prayed out loud in our group and that was the first time she had ever had public prayer.

Testimony 28

I have been following your Bible study class for about a year now. I must say I am impressed with how your ministry has grown. I took it upon myself to listen to all your lesson podcasts from the past and they have both enriched me physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I have learnt a lot from this class. I have also noticed how the class has grown in spiritual strength. One of the things that benefited me is that now I am not afraid of God. I use to be, but now it has melted away. The second thing is that you helped me to have a real life relationship with God. Now He is my friend that was always there and I love having him with me all the time. Thirdly, because of this class, it inspired me to take over and lead a class. I have called it “Let Us Reason Together,” adapting your inquisitive style and creating a class of free thinkers.

Testimony 36

Thank you and may God continue to bless you as you share with others the intricacies of how we are all “fearfully and wonderfully made”. I must share that you have opened a whole new world to me, and I have found tremendous healing through what you have shared in two of your books, “Could It Be This Simple?” and “The God Shaped Brain.” I praise God for what you shared, what I have learned, and how I have grown and healed! My prayer is that My Precious Jesus will be seen by others in the way I live, act, talk, etc. and they may be encouraged to know He is truly a GREAT God of LOVE, desiring that no one should perish! God Bless you in your continued endeavors to present Him as He really is!

Testimony 46

Over the past couple of years God has been expanding my view of Himself and His character. Along my approximately 40-year journey, I have often had questions, but was hesitant to voice these and step outside the traditionally accepted thinking, for fear of admitting that I may in fact be eternally lost. In the recesses of my thinking has been the thought – if one blindly accepts (which is widely regarded as “real faith”) and does not question, is this really ‘truth?’ I often find it challenging to grapple with very theological ‘speak,’ but Dr. Jennings has a real gift of explaining spiritual concepts with clear practical examples. The weekly discussions are growing my Christian experience and slowly changing my view of how to live as a child of God in today’s complex world. Finally the whole Old Testament sanctuary teaching moved in my mind from fantasy to reality!

Testimony 10

I personally download and listen to each of Come And Reason Ministries Bible study class lessons and PDF study notes to use when teaching my class. Really appreciate the class especially when Dr. Jennings is teaching. Thank God there are persons like him doing His work and traveling to share His beliefs.

Testimony 29

Thank you for all of your work to correct misconceptions about God’s character. So many people that my husband and I have talked to seem to be against the natural law construct and view it as “errant” and “dangerous.” Having learned more about it through your blogs and lessons, I don’t really understand why they view it that way, except that it means they have to relearn theology they have known for their entire lives. But I’m so excited to relearn this. For the past few years I have been questioning how I could trust a God who punishes arbitrarily and is full of wrath for those who don’t obey His commands. That view made me afraid to “mess up” or “not be good enough,” even within my relationship with God. I really appreciated the point you bring out about God not wanting us to serve Him because we are afraid, but because we love Him.
