Does God Make People Deaf and Blind?

Does God Make People Deaf and Blind?

This is Anisha, and I’m thirteen. I loved reading your book, The God-Shaped Brain, but I still have some doubts that needed clarification. Dr. Tim, in chapter 8, pages 116 to 118, you explained that God does not create all the health disorders that the human race suffers today, so how are we to fit the following verse in?

Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I am not a man of words (eloquent, fluent), neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and tongue.” The Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute or the deaf, or the seeing or the blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and will teach you what you shall say.” But he said, “Please my Lord, send the message [of rescue to Israel] by [someone else,] whomever else You will [choose]. EXODUS 4:10-13

Thank you for reading The God-Shaped Brain and for your diligence in studying for yourself and asking questions of clarification, Anisha. Your willingness to study and to clarify an apparent contradiction demonstrates real maturity — well done.

In regards to your question, “Does God use His power to create various sicknesses, diseases and congenital defects?” the answer is No. He created perfect, flawless, and sinless beings and it is sin that damaged God’s creation, resulting in the diseases and defects that we see.

In ancient times people believed that God caused everything to happen just the way He wanted it to. So, when Adam sinned, God wanted him to; when a person was murdered, God wanted it to happen; when a child was born blind or deaf, then God was making the child that way. This led to ideas that health and wealth were evidence of God’s blessing and that sickness and poverty were evidence of God’s cursing — both of which were connected, in their understanding, to sin. Therefore, if a person had a health problem, then they were ostracized as sinners.

The book of Job illustrates the wrongness of this type of understanding. In Chapter 1, God declares that Job is righteous and perfect in all his ways, but Satan alleges God is lying and that Job only pretends to be loyal to God. God grants Satan permission to have access to Job and what does Satan do? He brings disease. This is a critical point, because God did not require Satan to bring disease. Satan could have easily given Job more wealth, property, or popularity, but he didn’t, because Satan is a destroyer. In doing this, Satan revealed his true character. Furthermore, Job’s friends came along and accused Job of sinning and that God was punishing him with sickness, but the friends were wrong. God did not bring this upon Job.

Jesus dealt with the same misunderstanding in His day and this is why many of the religious leaders were angry with Him. In their limited understanding, they believed that He was placing Himself above God by healing people. To them, the sicknesses were God’s punishment on people and when Jesus healed them, they believed he was overruling God’s judgement.

So, what exactly is God saying to Moses in Exodus 4:10-13?

It is very simple. God is saying, “Moses, I am the Creator and I am the one who built human beings with the ability to speak. Don’t be afraid. I can give you the words to say.”

God was merely speaking in various figures of speech to give Moses reassurance that God would be with him when he went to confront Pharaoh.

Additionally, the text is about God creating the human species, not the diseases with which we suffer. The text says, “who makes the mute or the deaf, or the seeing or the blind” not who makes “people mute, deaf, and blind” or who makes “muteness, deafness, and blindness.” Thus, He is saying that all people are His, those with diseases and those without.

As the Bible teaches, God used his power directly in the creation of only three human beings—Adam, Eve, and the incarnation of Jesus. All three were sinless, but only Jesus stayed that way. When God created Adam and Eve, God built them with the ability to procreate beings in their own image. When they broke away from God’s design for life (His Law), they changed themselves and all their descendants were born damaged (“born in sin, conceived in iniquity” Psalms 51).

All human beings that have been born into the world (with the exception of Jesus) are a result of humans exercising the ability God gave them, yet without God directly intervening to make it happen a certain way. This includes the miracle births described in the Old Testament like Isaac, Samson, and Samuel. In those cases, God did not cause the pregnancies; God healed a health problem (infertility) and those human beings (husband and wife) chose to have intimate relations, which resulted in the pregnancies. If, after God healed those fertility problems, those women never had physical relations with their husband, then no pregnancies would have occurred. However, these miracle births were NOT what happened to Mary. The Holy Spirit came upon her and a pregnancy resulted by God’s direct action. The miracle births in the Old Testament were the result of two sinners procreating a new human in their own image.

God created the design for human procreation. He built the world in which we live, provides the sunshine, rain, nutrition, and the air we need in order to thrive. He sustains the laws of physics and the laws of health upon which life operates and in this way, God is involved. But, God does not cause the defects in His creation. Those occur simply because human beings have broken His design and God, through Christ, is working to restore His creation back into perfection — back to His original flawless design.

Testimony 31

It was very touching to hear the testimony of your class share how viewing God’s true character has changed their lives. My feelings are the same – there is so much freedom in knowing that God LOVES me – regardless of my… just, REGARDLESS! I’m still blown away by the true gospel, the fact that God is not ready to strike us when we fail. He is not arbitrary. He simply loves us and warns of the natural consequences because He can’t stand to see us suffer. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS GOD!!!

Testimony 57

You have helped make sense of thirty two years of confusion. The material you freely provide reorganized so much of my life into such a beautiful pattern that has always been hinted at from within, but misguided with my training and what I was experiencing externally. My filipno parents, who were converted from Catholicism to SDA, were sincere and did their best to raise me the right way and I have deep respect for them. However, being immigrants and not understanding the language made for a difficult transition as I was growing up, which also applied to my spiritual growth as I learned the patterns of religion. I have been listening to as many bible study classes and reading blog posts as my time in a work truck will allow, searching for the practical applications of where spirituality and reality meet, and I thank you for helping me find that. You have helped me reach a point in which I can truly say that I love God, that I believe He loves me, and, like David, I delight in His law. God bless.

I wanted to thank you very much for presenting your understanding of God. I’ve always been troubled by this question: Why did Jesus have to die? Since my conversion I understood that The Father & Jesus are one, I did not have issues with that. But was there not any other way to save us than for Jesus to die? I guess I actually had a question about God – if He is so wise, how come He did not find another way? I did not see the real ‘beauty’  in the cross. Only when you explained the picture in the medical context, Jesus providing medicine for my selfishness, have I started to finally ‘see the light’. Thank you so much. Your seminar, “Healing the Mind,” are absolutely marvelous & have shared them with my family and many other people, including colleagues at work. Thanks, thanks, thanks. May God bless you abundantly in your ministry.

I can’t even begin to thank you and your ministry enough for introducing me to the Truth about a loving and merciful God! I have my daughter and her in-laws to thank for sharing with me “The God-Shaped Brain” as well as your website. I listen to the Bible study class lessons on my daily walk. May God continue to bless your thirst-quenching ministry!

Testimony 46

Over the past couple of years God has been expanding my view of Himself and His character. Along my approximately 40-year journey, I have often had questions, but was hesitant to voice these and step outside the traditionally accepted thinking, for fear of admitting that I may in fact be eternally lost. In the recesses of my thinking has been the thought – if one blindly accepts (which is widely regarded as “real faith”) and does not question, is this really ‘truth?’ I often find it challenging to grapple with very theological ‘speak,’ but Dr. Jennings has a real gift of explaining spiritual concepts with clear practical examples. The weekly discussions are growing my Christian experience and slowly changing my view of how to live as a child of God in today’s complex world. Finally the whole Old Testament sanctuary teaching moved in my mind from fantasy to reality!

Just watched watched lesson 10 in the 1st quarter 2021 bible study classs on Isaiah. I want to thank you for your intellectual spirituality; it’s not an oxymoron! From the point of view of a teacher I also enjoy seeing how much personal pleasure you clearly take in not just tasting, but feasting on God’s word – it reminds me of Jeremiah not being able to hold it in! It makes me smile that your cup is so full and overflowing that you make it to Tuesday’s lesson (on a good day). It just goes to show the richness of God’s Word.

God bless the Come and Reason Team from our church here in Great Britain.

Testimony 17

The blessings of clarity and understanding you and your class inspire me to take from the word of God have impressed upon me so greatly the true, loving character of our Creator. I have found amazing freedom and joy through building a stronger, more intentional relationship with Him. What is new is that this is now a relationship built on love, reverence and respect rather than fear and obligation, and as such my eyes have been slammed OPEN as I am continually impressed by the manifestations of God’s true character in His provisions for fallen man.

I have found your Bible study class lectures to be very inspiring and useful as I prepare to teach class every other week. I subscribe to the podcast and download your notes on the weeks I teach. The audio and notes are such a great help in preparing. My own understanding of God’s character has grown as I teach the class. Commendations on the thought-provoking and well-prepared material Come and Reason provides. Personally, I get excited by the tie you make between the spiritual and mental/physical domains.

Testimony 45

I have been confused for years about what [christianity] calls [its] most disgusting teaching. It has never made much sense to me and for that reason has been evermore empty. I have listened to your class off and on and have struggled determining what is truth, because of the resistance design law encounters in the church. So, I thank God for your ministry. What you teach makes sense. It’s logical and backed up by the power of love. I have never seen that in Christ until now. I am astounded by the insight that is found when we look at God’s ministry through design law. All strength to this message, as I believe it to be the power of God.

I just want to tell you how blessed I have been reading “The Remedy!” It has become a daily part of my devotional relationship with God. In it I have found a God of love and a God that loves me! The bible has come alive for me! It is the first time that I can say that I have felt hope fill my heart as I have read God’s word. This is good news I can share! Thank you, Dr Jennings! Thank you for your heart for others. I can’t put into words how this has set me free! It has strengthened my trust and love for God.

Testimony 44

We were given a gift of the DVD set, “God and Your Brain,” and we just finished watching it. The truths in this are so powerful and truly an answer to a prayer. We’re seeing hope where once we thought God wasn’t answering our prayers to be free of certain mindsets. He answered with these DVDs and we are hungry for more. Thank you!

I have been truly blessed by your blogs and other resources. They have helped me to see things in a much brighter light and to reason things out better. Thank you so much for your ministry. Whenever I have the opportunity I pass along your material to my friends.

Testimony 55

I was born [into the church], then I left it for many years. 10 years ago, I came back, but I could not take the hypocrisy and the lack of answers to the missing pieces. I struggled, but I did not abandon my commitment to know the truth. God is leading me to the simple understanding of his relevance and I am relearning what the church taught me as a youth… that he loves me, that he has led me to a knowledge of him such as I have never known. He is using Dr. Jennings to connect the dots that are now so apparent and hiding in plain sight!

Testimony 29

Thank you for all of your work to correct misconceptions about God’s character. So many people that my husband and I have talked to seem to be against the natural law construct and view it as “errant” and “dangerous.” Having learned more about it through your blogs and lessons, I don’t really understand why they view it that way, except that it means they have to relearn theology they have known for their entire lives. But I’m so excited to relearn this. For the past few years I have been questioning how I could trust a God who punishes arbitrarily and is full of wrath for those who don’t obey His commands. That view made me afraid to “mess up” or “not be good enough,” even within my relationship with God. I really appreciated the point you bring out about God not wanting us to serve Him because we are afraid, but because we love Him.

I truly believe that to know who God really is the first step to understand ourselves in a balanced and kind way, so the healing can take place. Your approach really makes sense – Thank you for your ministry!
