My wife came home and told me about a song she heard on the radio by Brooks and Dunn called God Must Be Busy, here are a few of the lyrics:
That anchor man says the fight began somewhere in the Middle East. The world prays for peace. There’s a single mom just got laid off when she lost a job to some foreign hands in some faraway land. Last night in Oklahoma some twister took thirteen and they’re praying that they find the missing three. God must be busy. That highway sign |
They say she’s 4, Colorado plates, headed out-of-state in a Chevy van. It’s hard to understand. You can see it in the faces of all those highway strangers, they’re praying that God keeps that girl from danger. God must be busy. And I know in the big picture |
Have you ever felt like that, like God was too busy? Many of my patients express a similar feeling, a feeling of despair, a feeling of discouragement, a feeling that God doesn’t care. I have patients who have suffered, really suffered, horrible physical or sexual abuse, children murdered, loved ones killed in accidents, parents, siblings or other relatives sick and dying, job loss, financial loss, deployment to war, rape, drug and alcohol addictions, family members who lie, cheat and exploit, marital betrayal, hunger, homelessness, imprisonment. I have patients who have suffered, really suffered, and many of them feel like God must be busy – too busy, or at least too busy for them.
But the Christmas story reveals a different God, One who wasn’t too busy, One who hurts as we hurt, cries as we cry, feels as we feel. One who was tempted in every way, just as we are, yet without sin Hebrews 4:15. One who left His throne in heaven and became one of us, a real human being. Philippians 2:5-8. One who suffered, really suffered, horrible physical abuse, who was betrayed, abandoned and murdered, yet who never stopped loving us, never stopped reaching out to us, never stopped giving Himself for us. His life is the light which shines in the darkness, the light of truth, the light of hope, the light of love revealing how close God really is and how much He cares.
If you have seen His light, if you have been awakened by His truth, if you have been empowered by His love then let His light shine through you into a dark and desperate world – be God’s hands to someone in need, God’s heart to someone hurting, God’s ear to someone needing to talk. Let your light shine before men that they will praise God and know that He is not too busy!
