Was Jesus a Created Being?

You have inspired me to do more reading and research about the atonement and the way this is discussed [by some who imply] that God is vengeful and wrathful and Christ is the loving and merciful part of the Godhead.

However, I was recently listening to the podcast of Q4 Lesson 1 – God’s Nature – The Basis for Atonement in which you made the statement that Christ was a created being.

The comment was made about 46 minutes into the recording following a comment from one of the class participants about ‘God not making trash’.  You said that God made three human beings that we have a Biblical record of’.  You go on to name, Adam, Eve and Jesus as being perfect when the came from God’s hand.

Can you please clarify whether you believe that Christ was a created being or what you could have meant by such a comment?

Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Blessings, C. from England

I am so appreciative of your email because not only does it allow me to clarify an absolutely critical issue, but you have modeled genuine Christian charity by giving me the opportunity to clear up a misunderstanding rather than simply drawing, what would have been, an erroneous conclusion. Thank you!

So, to answer your question, Jesus Christ is fully God. His divine self is fully God, pre-existent, eternal, without beginning, omniscient, omnipotent, and invested with all the attributes of God. He is the second member of the Triune perfection of love we call the Godhead. Jesus’ divine self was NOT created and never had a beginning. His divine life is original, unborrowed, and underived:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. John 1:1-4

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Col 1:15-17

Understanding that Jesus is fully God in every aspect, however, does not complete our understanding of Jesus, because Jesus did something incredible:

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature  God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! Philippians 2:5-8

Jesus chose to blend His divinity with our humanity or, as some say, take our humanity upon His divinity. There was a time when Jesus entered the womb of Mary and joined His divinity with our humanity. At that point in human history, God used His power to “create” or “cause to grow” a human nature for Jesus in Mary’s womb.

Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; Hebrews 10:5

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit…But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:18,20

The point I was making in the lesson, to which you refer, is that the Bible only gives us evidence of God directly being involved (using His divine power) in the creation of three humans, Adam, Eve, and the human nature of Christ. I was pointing out that when God is directly involved in creating, there is always perfection, just as Adam and Eve were when God created them, and just as Jesus was also being without sin. God doesn’t use His power to directly create beings sinful or defective with birth defects, diseases, or deformities.

I was trying to explore a subtle error that has crept into Christian thought and which has brought mental distress and spiritual stumbling to many:  the idea that God directly created each of us, as individuals, just as we are with genetic flaws. God created the human race perfect and sinless when He created Adam and Eve. God gave to Adam and Eve the ability to procreate beings in their image and once they sinned, then all of their offspring have been “conceived in sin, born in iniquity” (Psalms 51:5). I have many patient’s who have struggled with their relationship with God, because they have believed the lie that God created them, as individuals, as they are and they ask, “Why did God want me to be schizophrenic?” “Why did God want my child to have Autism?” “Why did God create me with Bipolar disorder?” The truth is He didn’t!

All defects are a result of sin contaminating, damaging, and working to destroy God’s creation. The human race was created perfectly by God in the being Adam, then humanity was infected with sin by Adam with all the subsequent defects, diseases, and sinfulness. Jesus Christ partook of humanity and became a unique being. His eternal divine pre-existent self united or joined with our humanity in order to fix humanity, cure this creation from sin, cleanse and heal us from all sin, and recreate humanity back into God’s original ideal! Only in Jesus is there perfection. Only in Jesus is there remedy for sin. Only in Jesus is there salvation, because only Jesus, (in the human nature He assumed), live a perfect, sinless life, and loved perfectly even unto death and thereby “destroyed him who holds the power of death that is the devil” (Heb 2:14), and simultaneously “destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light” (2Tim 1:9,10).

I hope this clarifies your concerns and thanks again for giving me the opportunity to respond.

Testimony 72

I am blown away by the truth that you present. God’s Design Law makes so much sense! You have validated my impression that, if God is love, He would not kill those who don’t want to know him. If God gives us choice, then how can He destroy us if our choice is not to follow him. Thank you for opening my eyes and heart to the pure love of God seen through Jesus. The love I now have for Jesus is deeper and free from condemnation. My heart has been opened to love others as Jesus loves me. May God continue to bless your God-given insight into His word and your ministry. The truth has set me free!

Testimony 38

Since November 2015, when I started studying Gods word from this God Is Love point of view, my life has been transformed. My troubled marriage of 15 years has been healed and my husband and I are truly happy for the first time in 15 years. Now When I read the word of God I understand it so much better and I can’t help but see Gods love radiating through the pages to humanity. Gods word is living and active and I am blessed beyond measure to be having this amazing experience. God has given me a beautiful understanding of Jn 3:16 that amazes me more and more each day. Thank you again for your ministry.

Testimony 5

We listen to your bible studies lessons in our class in Montana. You actually were the main reason I decided to get a laptop, so I can go to your site and listen, read, learn, and print the class notes. I am so grateful to learn the correct view of God and his character. Now, to just have others have an interest in knowing, so I can share it with them. Good thoughts your way.

Testimony 7

Ok, so last night I listened to “The Law of Liberty” and “How to Achieve Victory: Freedom, Truth and Spirtual Warfare.” These are both MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES so far! The logic is just soooooo beautiful. I had to re-listen to them a couple of times. I just want to EXPLODE! (<< we assume with joy and happiness)

I am so pleased with the response your message is receiving at my church from the middle-aged to the young adults. I have given out 100 copies of the first two seminars and there are more request every week. One of my [class members] came to me after viewing the series, grateful and impressed with how easy the message was retained. He had been a Seventh-day Adventist in fear all his life, and felt like the scales were removed from his eyes after viewing the seminars. I am so impressed by the change I see in members who have received this message, we are in one accord. However, I am sadden by the negative response of the older people. I am verbally attacked anytime I talk about imposed laws, but I believe my mission is to enlightened everyone I can. I watch your Bible Study Class on YouTube every Friday night and I feel like I am apart of the class. All of you are in one accord and I am so blessed to have found you. I pray that all of you continue to spread this message and I am committed to doing my part.

Testimony 29

Thank you for all of your work to correct misconceptions about God’s character. So many people that my husband and I have talked to seem to be against the natural law construct and view it as “errant” and “dangerous.” Having learned more about it through your blogs and lessons, I don’t really understand why they view it that way, except that it means they have to relearn theology they have known for their entire lives. But I’m so excited to relearn this. For the past few years I have been questioning how I could trust a God who punishes arbitrarily and is full of wrath for those who don’t obey His commands. That view made me afraid to “mess up” or “not be good enough,” even within my relationship with God. I really appreciated the point you bring out about God not wanting us to serve Him because we are afraid, but because we love Him.

I’m a youth leader in South Africa. We as a youth group are currently using a lot of the material on the Come and Reason site. Since we’ve started using the material, our youth group has grown.

Testimony 54

I had a lot of pressure, as a pastor’s kid, to conform and be “good.” I was good at being “good.” I thought my life was going along well until it all started falling apart and I could not figure out why! In my search for “why is this happening to me, God?” I came across your book, “Could it be this Simple,” and God started revealing to me the many distortions I held about His character, His principles, and how He has designed His universe to operate. I remember thinking, “Wow, I have had this all backwards.” I was happy and angry all at the same time. Happy to have the light of truth break through the darkness, revealing a wonderful, beautiful way of understanding God and His plan for His children, and angry, because I felt deceived and cheated by the church, my family, and myself!

My heart thrills when I listen to your bible study lessons. Literally I have gone from death to life. It is a journey I look forward to every day, as God reveals areas this distortion affects. Praise GOD! I will ever be grateful to God for this ministry and your cooperation with the Spirit!

Testimony 71

When I was 9 years old, I remember setting at our devotional table with a hunger and thirst for God that wanted more, deeper, BETTER. I can remember literally crying and pounding on the table, “I know these teachers didn’t mean to give us error. They taught what THEY had been TAUGHT, but didn’t ANYBODY READ THE BOOK?!?!?” It mattered to me then. It mattered to me as a teenager. It matters now as I teach bible classes. It didn’t have to be so hard as I watched so many give up and lay God’s great plan and gift of salvation aside as being “impossible.” Then, a friend sent me a link to Come And Reason’s website. I grew excited. YES! FINALLY! Then another friend told me to stay away, saying her son had just broken up with a girl because she was involved with Come And Reason and that “Tim Jennings preaches a false gospel.” But, AFTER many years of developing an authentic and, dare I say FUN relationship with Jesus, through the Holy Spirit I see this message has been around a LONG time, since the apostle Paul, Ellen White, Graham Maxwell, Ray Foucher, and yourself (though I admit, you’ve made me back up, rewind and replay the clips, and get out my well-worn Bible on a few things.) I’m so thankful I have found LIGHT during these DARK days. I am not alone.

I have been confused for years about what [christianity] calls [its] most disgusting teaching. It has never made much sense to me and for that reason has been evermore empty. I have listened to your class off and on and have struggled determining what is truth, because of the resistance design law encounters in the church. So, I thank God for your ministry. What you teach makes sense. It’s logical and backed up by the power of love. I have never seen that in Christ until now. I am astounded by the insight that is found when we look at God’s ministry through design law. All strength to this message, as I believe it to be the power of God.

Just watched watched lesson 10 in the 1st quarter 2021 bible study classs on Isaiah. I want to thank you for your intellectual spirituality; it’s not an oxymoron! From the point of view of a teacher I also enjoy seeing how much personal pleasure you clearly take in not just tasting, but feasting on God’s word – it reminds me of Jeremiah not being able to hold it in! It makes me smile that your cup is so full and overflowing that you make it to Tuesday’s lesson (on a good day). It just goes to show the richness of God’s Word.

God bless the Come and Reason Team from our church here in Great Britain.

Your teachings about our heavenly Father have changed my life. Thank you sooooooo very very much! I know He’s doing some serious healing in my heart and life and I look forward to each new day to learn something new about Him and to just hear you speak about Him. Thank you, forever.

Testimony 42

I am just writing to say that I have been so blessed by the teachings of Come And Reason Minitries recently. I watched last week’s bible study lesson on Youtube and am thankful that the error in the printed lesson guide you use was pointed out and this week’s study was of equal benefit, if not more so. My understanding of God’s nature has been very confused of late and I am so grateful for clarity in this matter. I have never really fully understood previously how a good God can cause bad things to happen and now I realise that He doesn’t, it’s a natural consequence of sin. May the almighty Father and His Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, continue to bless your ministry.
