Genesis ◦ Chapter 13
1So Abram left Egypt and returned to the Negev with his wife and all his household and possessions, and Lot went with him. 2By this time, Abram was a very wealthy man, rich in livestock, silver and gold. 3He slowly migrated from the Negev back to his previous campsite between Bethel and Ai, 4where he had built an altar. There Abram praised and worshipped the Creator God of love. 5Lot, who was traveling with Abram, had also become wealthy, with large flocks, herds, and many tents for his family and servants. 6The pastureland was not sufficient to support the two of them if they stayed together, for their flocks and herds were very large, 7and eventually arguments broke out between Abram’s and Lot’s herdsmen. Additionally, the Canaanites and Perizzites were living in the region and were using the land at that time. 8So Abram said to lot, “Let’s not have any conflict between us, or between your people and mine, for we are family.9The entire countryside is available to us, so let’s settle our households in different areas. You take first pick: if you go to the left, then I’ll go to the right; but if you prefer the right, I’ll take the left – you choose.” 10Lot looked around and saw that the entire plain of the Jordan was well-watered and flourishing – a veritable paradise like the Lord’s garden; like the land of Egypt, all the way to Zoar. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11So Lot chose the entire plain of the Jordan for himself and headed east. Thus the two families moved apart. 12Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain, establishing his home near Sodom. 13Now the people of Sodom were extremely wicked: corrupt in selfishness, they lived in constant opposition to God’s character and methods of love. 14After Lot had moved away, the Lord said to Abram, “Look around you in every direction – north, south, east and west. 15The whole earth – all that you see – I will give to you and your descendants forever. 16I will make your descendants beyond counting – like trying to count the dust of the earth. 17Go ahead and walk about the land that I am giving to you.” 18So Abram moved his household and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the Creator God of love.
