Genesis  ◦   Chapter 36

These are the descendants of Esau (also called Edom).

Esau married Canaanite women: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite. 3He also married Basemath daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.

Adah bore to Esau a son named Eliphaz; Basemath bore him a son named Reuel, 5and Oholibamah bore him three sons: Jeush, Jalam and Korah. All these sons were born to Esau while he lived in Canaan.

Esau moved his entire household – wives, sons, daughters and all servants, along with all his livestock and other animals and all the possessions he acquired in Canaan – to an area away from his brother Jacob. 7He left, because the land where he and Jacob were living could not support them both; they had too much livestock between them for the land to sustain them. 8So Esau (also called Edom) moved to the hill country of Seir.

These are the descendants of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir.

Esau had his son Eliphaz by his wife Adah, while his son Reuel was by his wife Basemath.

Eliphaz’s sons were: Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam and Kenaz. 12Eliphaz also had a son named Amalek by his concubine named Timna. These were Esau and Adah’s grandsons.

Reuel’s sons were: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were Esau and Basemath’s grandsons.

His three sons Juesh, Jalam and Korah were by his wife Oholibamah daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon.

These are the tribes that descended from Esau: The tribal leaders from the sons of his firstborn Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, 16Gatam and Amalek. These were the leaders descended from Eliphaz in Edom. They were descendants of Esau and his wife Adah.

The tribal leaders from Esau’s son Reuel were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were the leaders descended from Reuel in Edom. They were descendants of Esau and his wife Basemath.

The tribal leaders from Esau and his wife Oholibamah were Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were the leaders descended from Esau and his wife Oholibamah, daughter of Anah. 19All of these leaders and their tribes were descended from Esau (also called Edom).

The original people who inhabited the land were the descendants of Seir the Horite. His sons were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These were Seir’s sons and the Horite tribal leaders in Edom.

Lotan’s sons were Hori and Homam; Lotan’s sister was Timna.

Shobal’s sons were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam.

Zibeon’s sons were Aiah and Anah. Anah is the one who discovered the hot springs in the desert while grazing his father’s donkeys.

Anah’s children were his son Dishon and his daughter Oholibamah.

Dishon’s sons were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran and Keran.

Ezer’s sons were Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan.

Dishan’s sons were Uz and Aran.

These were the Horite leaders: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 30Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. Each of these Horite leaders headed a tribe named after them, in the land of Seir.

These were the kings who reigned in Edom before any descendant of Israel became king: 32Bela son of Beor became king of Edom. He ruled from the city of Dinhabah.

After Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah became king.

After Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites became king.

After Hushan died, Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the land of Moab, became king. He ruled from the city of Avith.

After Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah became king.

After Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth, the River City, became king.

After Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Acbor became king.

After Baal-Hanan son of Acbor died, Hadar became king. He ruled from the city of Pau and was married to Mehetabel whose mother was Matred and grandmother was Me-Zahab.

These were the tribal leaders descended from Esau, by their region: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 41Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 42Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 43Magdiel and Iram. These were the tribal leaders of Edom, by region and tribe in the area where they lived. This was the family of Esau, the father of the Edomites.
