Genesis ◦ Chapter 10
1These are the descendants of Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, who themselves had sons after the flood. 2The descendants of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras. 3The descendants of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah. 4The descendants of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim and Dodanim; they inhabited Spain, Cyprus and Rhodes.5Their descendants became seafaring people who spread out into their lands, divided into their own tribes and nations, each speaking their own language. 6 The descendants of Ham were Cush, Egypt, Libya and Canaan. 7 The descendants of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The descendants of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. 8Cush was the ancestor of Nimrod, and Nimrod profaned himself into the first powerful overlord on the earth. 9He was a strong, bloodthirsty hunter who took what he wanted by force and killed for sport blatantly before the Lord – that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a strong, bloodthirsty hunter who killed for sport blatantly before the Lord.” 10He started his domination over others by building his empire with the cities of Babylon, Erech, Akkad and Calneh, all in the land of Babylonia. 11He expanded his empire, going to Assyria and building Ninevah, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, 12and Resen, which is located between Nineveh and the great city of Calah. 13The descendants of Egypt were the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, 14Pathrusites, Casluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and Caphtorites. 15The descendants of Canaan were Sidon his firstborn, and the Hittites, 16Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, 17Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, 18Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites. The Canaanites eventually spread out 19and the borders of Canaan extended from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim – all the way to Lasha. 20 These are the descendants of Ham by tribe, language, territory and nation. 21Shem, whose older brother was Japheth, also had descendants; Shem was the ancestor of all the descendants of Eber. 22The descendants of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram. 23The descendants of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah was the father of Eber. 25Eber had two sons: one was named Peleg (which means 'division'), because during his lifetime the people of the earth were divided into different groups; and his brother was named Joktan. 26The descendants of Joktan were Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All of these were the descendants of Joktan. 30They lived in the land that stretched from Mesha toward Sephar in the eastern hill country. 31These are the descendants of Shem by tribe, language, territory and nation. 32These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their descent, by their nations. From these, after the flood, the nations spread out over the earth.
