Psalms  ◦   Chapter 83

1O God, do not rest from your redemptive work,
do not be at peace while selfishness rages;
O Creator God, do not stop opposing evil.

2Look at the confusion and uproar your enemies create
and see how those who hate you rebel against love and truth.

3They connive and plot to destroy your helpers;
they conspire to destroy those through whom your precious remedy is given.

4"Come," they say, "let us destroy the entire nation,
so that the remedy that transformed Israel will be completely forgotten."

5With hearts united in selfishness, they agree on their plan;
they form an alliance against you and your methods of love.

6Those who oppose your remedy include the people of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
the Moabites and Hagrites,

7the people of Gebal, Ammon and Amalek,
the Philistines and the people of Tyre.

8Assyria has also joined them,
uniting with the Ammonites and Moabites, the descendants of Lot.

9Do not let them succeed,
as you did not let the false gods of Midian succeed,
as you did not let Sisera and Jabin succeed at the river Kishon —

10they died at Endor
and their corpses became manure for the ground.

11Let those who refuse your remedy
be like the Midianite generals Oreb and Zeeb;
let them reap the death they have chosen —
like the Midianite kings Zebah and Zalmunna,

12who, choosing selfishness over love, said,
"Let us take for ourselves the land God has chosen."

13Let them be like tumbleweed, O my God,
dispersed like chaff before the wind.

14As fire consumes the forest,
may the flames of truth burn down their mountain of self-sufficient lies,

15may the storms of life overtake them,
may the swirling tempest of their selfish hearts terrify them.

16May they see themselves as they truly are and be ashamed,
so that people will seek your character of love, O Creator God.

17These unhealed will know only humiliation and terror;
they will die in disgrace.

18They will begrudgingly acknowledge that you alone are God —
that you are the Most High, the Creator and Sustainer of the entire earth.
